Guwahati – Tension continued today in Silapathar town of Dhemaji district in northern Assam following ransacking of All Assam Students Union (AASU) office by members of a Bengali organisation.
Tension broke out again this morning when AASU members staged protest against yesterday's vandalism. They also engaged in verbal dispute with security personnel deployed in the town. Meanwhile, nine people have been arrested so far for alleged involvment in the vandalism and police case registered against the organisers' of the rally. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has ordered an enquiry into the incident. Members of a little-known Bengali organisation that had taken out a rally in Silapathar yesterday, demanding citizenship for Bengali Hindus from Bangladesh, had allegedly vandalised the AASU office, leading to confrontations between members of the two groups.
