New Delhi, Expressing concern over suicides by farmers in Tamil Nadu and other states, the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha today demanded waiver of farmers’ loans.
Mar 29 (UNI) Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Tiruchi Siva of the DMK said 200 farmers have committed suicide in Tamil Nadu which was very serious and the government should consider waiving off their loans. He said the state government had requested the Centre to grant assistance from the National Disaster Relief Fund for dealing with drought-like situation in the state, but the Centre had sanctioned only a small amount. D Raja of the CPI said, "Agriculture was in deep crisis and the condition of Tamil Nadu farmers was miserable. They are protesting at Jantar Mantar here for the last two weeks demanding loan waiver." He said a delegation had even met the Finance Minister and the Agriculture Minister and the "government should take a categorical decision on loan waiver to farmers". The CPI Member also raised the issue of hydrocarbon project at Neduvasal and asked the Government to assure the farmers that it would not implement the project.
