‘Sonam Kapoor Ahuja’ was a choice’, She wanted to get her name ‘numerically right’

Sonam changed her name on her social media handles from ‘Sonam Kapoor’ to ‘Sonam K Ahuja’ hours after she exchanged vows with long-time beau Anand Ahuja. Sonam’s move sparked a lot of debate on social media with a lot of women commenting on how Sonam portrayed herself as a feminist and empowered woman and how her actions set a wrong precedent to millions of women who are forced into doing similar things under the oppressive pressure of patriarchy. One Twitter user even went to the extent of calling her “patriarchy conforming aunty.” However, in an interview, while at Cannes, Sonam said, “It’s a choice, at the end of the day.” She continued, “If people don’t understand the concept of feminism, they need to go online and look at the description. And how do you know Anand has not changed his name?” “I have always said that I am a feminist. I have the choice to change my name to what I want to. Kapoor is also my father’s name. So it is a man’s name anyway. I chose to keep both. Anand has also changed his name but nobody wrote about that. I just decided to do it on social media because that’s my platform to say that I have made a choice. It is my personal choice. Nobody put a gun to my head. You should ask him (Anand). He has also changed his name and decided to add something as well,” Sonam further said. Meanwhile, according to numerologist,  Sonam Kapoor changed her name “at his behest” because she wanted to get her name “numerically right” after her wedding. Sonam and Anand tied the knot on May 8 surrounded by friends and family. Her wedding reception, held later in the evening, turned into one of Bollywood’s biggest celebrations with some of the industries biggest stars including Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Ranveer Singh, Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Karan Johar, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Ali Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor in attendance.
