Supreme Court issues notice to the Centre and all state governments on a PIL seeking direction to start a project or programme to provide mental healthcare and treatment to persons with mental illness placed near or inside faith-based mental asylums. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, informs the Supreme Court that 17 persons suffering from mental illness, who were chained in a faith-based mental asylum in Uttar Pradesh’s Badaun district, were released and handed over to their families. SC Justice S Abdul Nazeer on mentally ill persons chained in Badaun says “It’s not the people taken there, but the people who take them there who are mentally ill”
