Mehul Choksi surrenders Indian citizenship, gives passport to Antigua govt

New Delhi: Diamond merchant Mehul Choksi, who is facing a multi-agency probe in India in connection with the Rs 14,000-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam, has reportedly relinquished his Indian citizenship by surrendering his passport to the Antiguan government.

It may be noted that the Diamantaire Mehul Choksi, fled the country after defrauding Punjab National Bank. He fled from the US to Antigua in order to save himself from extradition as India did not have an extradition treaty with Antigua at that time.

The Enforcement Directorate is has asked the PMLA court to declare Mehul Choksi a 'fugitive economic offender'.

During the hearing, Mehul Choksi's lawyer told a Mumbai court that presently Mehul Choksi is not medically fit to travel. The lawyer further said that Mehul Choksi's statement can either be recorded through video conferencing or the ED officers can go to Antigua and record his statement or wait for three months if his conditions improve, he'll come back to record his statement.
